Tea Garden - 4633 Convoy St #107

Should I continue to do this, one thing will become apparent - I like to go to Convoy Street for a lot of my meals out. For those of you unfamiliar with this particular location in San Diego, it is an area known for it's mixture of Asian businesses and eateries. The includes (but is not limited to) Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese.

One place in particular is Tea Garden. Recently relocated to a larger space, it is casual dinning with a crowd consisting of younger men and women out after class, or taking time to study while eating quickly prepared, but tasty meals and/or boba teas.

The menu is diverse and inexpensive. I do not think that there is an item over 10 dollars (but don't quote me on that), thus making it a fantastic value for anyone.

I have a weakness for what I call "the burnt sugar flavors." The milk tea that I ordered is no exception when it comes to pleasing that particular aspect of my palate. It is called a Dark Molasses Milk Tea. I highly recommend it. It's exceptionally tasty and quite refreshing.

For our appetizer, we had what is called Sliced Pork with Garlic. It is thickly-sliced pork belly covered in garlic and garnished with cilantro. The best aspect of this is the sauce. If you like garlic, this is for you. It is extremely pungent. I cannot get enough of it. Thankfully, I share this dish, so I am not the only one with monster garlic breath.

I have recently started eating more vegetables than I normally do (I do normally eat vegetables, I am just trying to have more). I got the fried noodles with vegetables and no meat. It was a delightful dish perfectly portioned that one doesn't feel gorged after finishing it.

And the GF, my dinner had the salt & pepper popcorn chicken with rice. The popcorn chicken has the perfect balance of saltiness, spiciness from the red peppers blended with a crunchy texture. The serving of white rice is served with stewed meat on top. The dish comes, too, with a side of steamed vegetables.

In all, a delightful favorite of mine and my girlfriend's. When we can't quite decide what we want, this place is a safe bet. I have gotten into the habit of trying Singapore Noodles at different locations, and Tea Garden has a delicious one at that.

Visit when you have a chance.

Fried green tomatoes, or an attempt, at least.

Well, me and the GF decided to attempt some fried green tomatoes. We usually get the garden-fresh fruit from her father. Unfortunately for him, a critter of some sort has been knocking down some of the tomatoes before they get a chance to ripen. So we thought, let's fry these things up and see how they taste.

Of course, if you know me at all (which maybe none of you do), I like to do things a little fool hardy. We made some "Rustic Fried Green Tomatoes."

The GF had made some gluten-free breadcrumbs using the oven pilot to dry them out. We food-processed them to as fine as the machine would allow, adding cayenne, Italian seasoning, dried garlic, freshly ground black pepper, and a dash of sea salt. We dredged the tomatoes in buttermilk, coated, and re-dredged & re-coated. After which we fried it up in some medium-heated extra-virgin coconut oil.

Because we were not using an extra-fine base like corn flour or wheat flour, a good portion of what we used fell off during the frying process. But no matter - it tasted good, the tomatoes were still crisp, and it was delicious.

Thank you for reading and looking at these photos.

Not official yet, but still delicious.

So, here I am out at the Carlsbad State Beach visiting friends and not out at an actual eatery when you realize that what can bring out the best taste in food is when you share it with loved ones.

Things to look forward to...

I use my iPhone and a photography app to take much of what I eat (and whomever I am out with). Here is a small sample of what I will be posting. This first photo is of a home dish I made. The rest are of various places I have been. These are all pre-blog, of course, so I have no notes of what I ordered and where save for FourSquare check-ins.

From now on, notes will be taken and my own personal experiences will be shared to those willing to read.

Thank you.

Blogging about food

I keep taking iPhone photos of my food and what I eat at restaurants. Friends and family keep telling me that I need to post these photos and write a blog about my experiences eating out.

Well, here's to new possibilities....
